Games like Subway Surfers for your phone

Swipe, tap, tilt or hold: how each of these free games plays on a touchscreen, and which ones you can manage with one thumb.

Snow Rush cover art: A snowboarder in a red jacket carves down a steep run toward a valley far below, between pines and blue peaks.Snake Rush cover art: A green snake winds across a checkerboard lawn toward a red apple and a golden apple in an orchard at sunset.Drift Circuit cover art: A red sports car drifts in white smoke round a kerbed hairpin of a winding road floating above the clouds among sunny islands.Sky Flap cover art: A coral bird flies between tall teal stone castle towers toward a gold star under a full moon.

Subway Surfers is at home on a phone, where every move is a swipe. Each game below plays on phones and tablets as well, inside the browser, so there is nothing to fetch from a store. What differs is the job your thumb has: two swipe the way Subway Surfers does, three need only a tap, one is flown by tilting the phone, and one is steered by holding a side of the screen. This page groups them by that.

Swipe, as in Subway Surfers

Two of these games use the swipe controls you already know, one with lanes and one on a grid.

Three-lane 3D snowboard runner

Snow Rush

Swipe left or right to change lanes, up or tap to jump and down to duck; keep your finger down after swiping up for a higher jump. The game fills whatever screen it is on.

Play Snow Rush

Swipe-to-steer classic snake

Snake Rush

Swipe to turn, and keep your finger down to draw an L for two turns in a row, or tap the screen just to the side of the head you want to turn toward. It is built for a phone held upright.

One thumb, one tap

These need nothing more than a tap anywhere on the screen, so one hand is plenty, and none of them asks you to hold.

One-tap endless drift road

Drift Circuit

Tap anywhere to take the next bend, with the phone upright or sideways. While you are new, a coloured line painted on the road marks where to tap.

Play Drift Circuit

One-tap endless castle flyer

Sky Flap

Each tap anywhere on the screen is one flap. Calm, regular taps work better than frantic ones; about one every two-thirds of a second keeps the bird level.

Play Sky Flap

One-tap planet-hopping rocket

Orbit Hop

Tap anywhere to launch. For the first three planets a glow on the orbit shows the right moment, and if you stop tapping for ten seconds the game waits for you.

Play Orbit Hop

Tilt or hold to steer

These two steer all the time rather than in steps, which is further from Subway Surfers but sits nicely in the hand.

3D paper-plane canyon flyer

Tilt Glide

Tilt the phone to bank, climb and dive once you have allowed motion access; whatever angle you start at is treated as flat. Rather not tilt? Choose Play without tilt and drag a thumb, and tap anywhere to boost.

Play Tilt Glide

Steer-and-bounce sky climber

Cloud Hopper

Keep a finger on the left or right side of the screen and the bird drifts that way. It plays upright on a phone, and for the first 30 seconds safety clouds catch every fall, so a first climb is easy to start.

Questions

Do I need to install an app to play these on my phone?

No. They are web games on Gamefinity: open one in your phone's browser and it starts there, with nothing to download from an app store.

Which of these can I play with one thumb?

Drift Circuit, Sky Flap and Orbit Hop take a single tap anywhere on the screen. Cloud Hopper is close behind, since you only hold one side of the screen or the other. Snow Rush and Snake Rush need swipes in four directions.

Can I play Tilt Glide without tilting my phone?

Yes. Pick Play without tilt and fly with a thumb instead: drag it to the side to bank, upward to climb and downward to dive, and drag further for a sharper turn. A tap still spends a boost.
